Geico's Literal Genie (2014)

picture from blog.geico.com
Geico's latest attack on the senses is their "everyone knows that...but did you know" series. Geico is an insurance company based in the US known for an English accented lizard mascot and tongue-in-cheek ad campaigns.

Here they have a Genie (series debut in 2014) granting "literal" wishes, and, according to Geico's blog, this completes their "did you know" campaign:

and has evidently evolved into Genie and Me the mini-sitcom...

Here in California there is a prominent Bail Bonds company called Aladdin. It's a fitting name I guess, like the genie they can get you out of jail?

Their parent company is called "Two Jinn Inc."!

restaurant city

This week is Arabian Nights week on Restaurant City, the online, possibly (not sure myself) Facebook only, pseudo-virtual reality restaurant game.

It's kind of a cash game which starts as free but if you want to add as many bells and whistles as you can (for your own gratification) you can but it will cost you cash, most of the Arabian Nights gear and most of the any special week gear costs real money, though the game can also be played for 'free', (but not with the really cool add-ons available!).

Barmecidal

I've subscribed to Merriam-Webster's "word of the day" emails for a long time now (http://www.facebook.com/merriamwebster), it's an interesting way to learn new words.

Today the word of the day was one I've never heard of but it's got a Nights related etymology.  I think they've got the Barmecide history a bit wrong but then again the information on them is fairly scant.  One thing is for sure there are a lot of derogatory things written about the Barmecides, owing perhaps to the speculated slight that Jafar gave to Harun Al Rashid.  This English word appears to be a continuation of that negative portrayal.

"The Word of the Day for July 19 is:

Barmecidal   \bahr-muh-SYE-dul\   adjective
: providing only the illusion of abundance

Example sentence:
The tax rebate is a Barmecidal windfall, coming as it does in the wake of new hidden taxes on consumer goods and services.

Did you know?
"Barmecide" is the name of a family of princes in a tale from The Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment). One prince in the family torments a beggar by inviting him to a fabulous feast, at which all the dishes are imaginary. The poor man plays along with his malicious host, pretending to get drunk on the imaginary wine; he then gets even by knocking down the patronizing royal."

1001 Nachts the ride, and Amy Wolfe the bride

The "1001 Nachts" is a common "county-fair" type of ride, which, according to its wikipedia site (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Baba_%28ride%29) is also called "Ali Baba," "1001 Nights," "Rainbow," and "Alladin."

Someone is actually married to the ride. Amy Wolfe, a church organist from Pennsylvania, garnered International attention for her obsession with the ride, going so far as to marry it and change her last name to Weber (after the ride's manufacturer). Her condition (that she has been diagnosed with as a medical condition), called objectum sexual (OS), is somehow also linked to her Asperger's Syndrome.

Though it's a serious illness that impairs "normal" functioning it's also a bit revealing about what makes people "normal" in the first place as well. As far as I can tell most all relationships, human/human and human/inanimate are imbued with several levels of fantasy and imagination on many different levels, many to a "religious" or even "obsessional" level.

Somaliland coins feature Richard F. Burton

The breakaway sort of country of Somaliland (northern part of Somalia, which, as I was told by a taxi driver from the region, enjoys a more relative amount of peace and prosperity than Somalia) has pictures of Richard F. Burton on two of their coins currently in use as currency.

One is the 5 shilling coin and the same picture is also on the 2,000 shilling coin.

Opa Locka - Florida

Photobucket

The town of Opa Locka Florida, described by wikipedia:

"The city was developed by Glenn Curtiss and was based on the Arabian nights theme with streets that have names like Sabur Lane, Sultan Avenue, Ali Baba Avenue, and Sesame Street. Opa-locka has the largest collection of Moorish architecture in the Western hemisphere.[2]

The name Opa-locka is a contraction of a Native American name for the area, “Opa-tisha-woka-locka”, meaning "The high land north of the little river on which there is a camping place."[3]"

If anyone finds out or knows how Curtiss was interested in the Nights I would be very interested to find out too.

Unfortunately, according to the city's government website: "The City has experienced a sharp decline, become one of the most violent and poverty stricken communities in South Florida."

A list of street names I found include the following:

Fisherman Rd/St
Ali Baba Ave
Aladdin St
Sinbad Ave
Salih St
Sharazad Blvd
Ahmad St
Sesame St
Dunad Ave
Sharar Ave
Sabur Ln
Beder St
Jann Ave
Banu St
Bahman Ave
Oriental Blvd
Arabia Ave
Harem Ave
Kasim St

alibaba.com name origins

Interesting bit of Internet news, one of the world's biggest Internet companies is Alibaba.com and Jack Ma, the CEO, got inspired for the name while in San Francisco:

"OPEN, SESAME

Ma, who has been dubbed the father of the Chinese Internet, said he chose the Arabian Nights-inspired name for his e-commerce company because it is meaningful to people around the world. He said the name stuck after a San Francisco waitress replied "Open, Sesame!" to Ma's request for her thoughts when he said "Alibaba.""

The Forty Thieves Houses - Richmond Heights MO

I happened upon this historical bit of interest because of the news story pasted below. There are a set of houses in Richmond Heights Missouri that are called "The Forty Thieves Houses" because they were originally built out of stolen/borrowed building supplies from the nearby Lousiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis in 1904.

Not sure if the Exposition had much to do with the Nights but it would be interesting to research. Many of these expositions had Nights-esque Orientalisms which developed things like "belly-dancing" and many of the US's notions of the East because the kitschy entertainments were linked with historical information presented as truths.

More information about the expo:

Sonic and the Secret Rings - Video Game

Here are some Youtube videos of Sonic and the Secret Rings video game featuring an Arabian Nights sort of theme. The usual suspects are here: Ali Baba, Aladdin and Sinbad. Why can't they make a videogame based on the Porter and the Three Ladies of Baghdad?

Here's the intro with the storyline behind the game (a bit long but interesting to see the incorporation of the Nights theme), the rest of the clips are shorter:

Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival 2009

This fair is held annually in Indio, CA and showcases the Coachella Valley's agricultural production with its date crop as the fair's highlight (perhaps in name only as there are few (though the ones they do have are quite interesting) date-related exhibits). They also have the area's famous date milkshakes which are super sweet and very tasty.

If you didn't know the area is known for its date (as in date tree) production with original tree lineages from Iraq and the Middle East. There is even a city/"census-designated place" called Mecca, California! One of the more prominant farms has a video show about the area's history and several date dessert packages and date shakes.

The fair's theme since its start in 1947 has been the 1001 Nights (aka Arabian Nights) and each year they present a live story from the collection and crown a local teen "Queen Scheherazade" along with Princess Dunyazade and a Princess Jasmine. They also have daily camel races.

This year's (2009) festival's play was "Ali Baba and the Den of Thieves" which was quite interesting to see performed in the rural arena of Indio (we may have been some of the only out-of-towners who travelled to the fair). The play incorporated several pop songs (ABBA, the Smiths, even the Turkish song "Kiss Kiss") which gave it a contemporary/ironic feel ala Moulin Rouge (the film). The production and music was quite good although several scenes felt a bit high-schooly and the microphones failed a couple of times.

The story began with the frame story of the Nights, fairly faithful and replete with the wife's infidelity and Shahriyar's subsequent beheadings (although no mention of who the original wife was unfaithful with).

The story of Ali Baba was a basic morality tale of the power of greed, money and evil vs. the power of love, with love winning in the end. In these economic times it felt appropriate.

Overall ok, a bit long at an hour and 20 mins or so. Will take some convincing to get the family to return next year I fear. We missed the show's opening prologue "A Tribute to the Troops" unfortunately.

Arabian Nights celebrates music, dance, costumes
Aldrich M. Tan • The Desert Sun • February 15, 2009

When the sun goes down, the spotlight rises on the mid-sized Arabian Nights set for the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival.

For months, the set remained unused on the empty fairgrounds in Indio.

But during the fair, the stage comes alive with a nightly pageant full of music, dance, and shimmering costumes.

The Arabian Nights-themed musical is at 6:15 p.m. nightly and free with fair admission.

It is a major part of the festival's tradition, said Richard De Haven, one of the show's producers.

“It is one the oldest shows in the valley,” De Haven said.

Each year's show focuses on a different tale from “One Thousand and One Nights,” De Haven said.

This year's tale is “Ali Baba and the Den of Thieves.”

The pageant organizers installed a large cave on the stage that contains at least 100 shimmering lights specifically for the performance, De Haven said.

Auditions for the show took place in October, De Haven said. The rehearsals started on weekends in January.

The performance starts with an American salute to honor the military, De Haven said.

On opening night, the 158th Battalion of California Cadet Corps from Indio High School presented the colors.

“This is good for my students,” Battalion Lt. Ed Ogimachi said. “All my students are very patriotic and this is to show they are proud of their school.”

Leroy Vesper, 73, stood up and saluted as the U.S. Air Force anthem was played on stage.

Vesper, a winter resident of Palm Desert, said he served in the Air Force for 40 years.

“I was pleasantly surprised,” he said. “This was wonderful.”

The pageant begins following an introduction by Queen Scheherazade Madi DiPietro, Princess Jasmine Amariz Mendoza, and Princess Dunyazade Stacy Jones.

The Ali Baba tale has been modified from the original to be less violent, De Haven said.
